Burns School of Medicine\">JABSOM<\/abbr> presents his development of seriodiagnostic assay capable of specifically identifying Zika virus infections from other related viruses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Potential game-changing research from three <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a> professors were highlighted at the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Tech Showcase held on October 18 at the Bankers&#8217; Club at First Hawaiian Center. Presentations from the fields of oceanography, tropical medicine and tropical agriculture were made to an invitation-only audience of more than 30 local investors, entrepreneurs and business leaders. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These are three examples of the world-class research being continuously conducted at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> that seek and engage the major issues facing us today,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Vice President for Research and Innovation <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/vassilis-syrmos\/\">Vassilis L. Syrmos<\/a><\/strong>. &ldquo;Through vehicles like this showcase, we hope to develop and strengthen community awareness and investment in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/innovation\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Innovation Initiative<\/a> and its goal to help diversify the state&#8217;s economy through the creation of a thriving innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem based on <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> research.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Presentations<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Revolutionizing climate and ocean change research sensors<\/strong><br \/>\nAssociate Professor <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/glazer\/Brian_T._Glazer\/Home.html\">Brian Glazer<\/a><\/strong> of the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/\">Department of Oceanography<\/a> showcased his work on oceanographic technological innovations and solutions, which are low-cost, do-it-yourself embedded system sensors that would replace expensive and overly complex commercial sensors and equipment in his field. Glazer&#8217;s research could revolutionize the monitoring of environmental factors pertinent to climate and ocean change research by making sensors readily available, affordable and accurate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monitoring Zika virus infection<\/strong><br \/>\nProfessor <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/tropicalmedicine\/?page_id=684\"><strong>Wei-Kung Wang<\/strong><\/a>  described his development of a superior serodiagnostic assay capable of specifically identifying Zika virus infections from other related viruses. As microcephaly has become an international concern, Wang&#8217;s procedure can monitor the Zika virus infection during pregnancy for at-risk mothers. Wang is with the of the John A. Burns School of Medicine&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/tropicalmedicine\/\">Department of Tropical Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Developing insecticides for specific pests<\/strong><br \/>\nProfessor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/depart\/mbbe\/Li.html\">Qing Li<\/a><\/strong> of the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/home.aspx\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> highlighted his research on monoterpenoids from select essential oils for toxicity effects on agricultural, storage and household pests.
