University of Hawaiʻi<\/span>–West Oʻahu<\/span><\/a> students Kriselyn Cortado<\/strong>, Thalia Lawrence<\/strong> and Kristin Umakoshi<\/strong> were awarded the Undergraduate Student Poster Presentation Award in the Mathematics at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos\/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science<\/a> (SACNAS) conference in Salt Lake City, October 19–21. The SACNAS<\/abbr> conference featured more than 1,000 student research presentations.<\/p>\n

The students performed an ethnographic case study in a diverse college algebra classroom at 东精影业<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span>. They discovered a positive correlation among group work, student engagement and student mathematics self-efficacy, which in turn increases participation, enhances mathematics comprehension and elevates mathematics achievement.<\/p>\n

“All of the Kikaha STEM<\/abbr> Student Researchers<\/a> made important contributions to their respective fields and winning the award was fantastic news for 东精影业<\/abbr> West O\u02bbahu,” said Michael Furuto<\/strong>, 东精影业<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> assistant professor of mathematics<\/a>, who served as faculty advisor for the winning group. Furuto helped guide, direct and support the students\u2019 research.<\/p>\n

The three students were part of a contingent of 东精影业<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> students and faculty who traveled to the conference. The group also included students Alexander Bautista<\/strong>, Morgan Dutkoski<\/strong>, Arion Northrup<\/strong>, Destiny Mabalot<\/strong> and Christine Baltazar<\/strong>, along with mentors Furuto and Assistant Professors Kamuela Yong<\/strong>, Olivia George<\/strong> and Megan Ross<\/strong>. Bautista, Dutkoski and Northrup also made presentations.<\/p>\n
