From the film Documenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movement<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The ʻUluʻulu<\/span> Archive<\/a> at the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span>–West Oʻahu<\/span><\/a> explores how the early years of Native Hawaiian activism was documented with a screening of Documenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movement<\/em>\u00a0followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers who helped capture the rise of the movement in the 1970s.<\/p>\n

The event on Monday, November 6, 11 a.m–12:30 p.m. at the\u00a0ʻUluʻulu<\/span> Henry Kuʻualoha<\/span> Giugni Moving Image Archive of Hawaiʻi<\/span>\u00a0in the James and Abigail Campbell Library is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the community<\/p>\n

Documenting Activism<\/em> film<\/h2>\n

ʻUluʻulu<\/span> produced the 45-minute film to commemorate the first landing by activists on the island of\u00a0Kahoʻolawe<\/span> on January 4, 1976\u00a0to protest military use of the island for bombing practice.<\/p>\n

Documenting Activism<\/em> draws footage from\u00a0Moʻolelo<\/span> o ka ʻ\u0101ina<\/span><\/em>, a 1984 KITV<\/abbr> production that was unique among commercial broadcasters at the time in attempting to address Native Hawaiian issues from the perspective of Hawaiians. To this ʻUluʻulu<\/span> added raw footage from its Protect Kaho\u2018olawe \u2018Ohana collection which highlights footage of activists preparing for the first voyage to Kahoʻolawe<\/span>, as well as the initial landing on the island. <\/p>\n

The panelists were chosen because of their involvement in the Kahoʻolawe<\/span> demonstrations as well as their continued contribution to films that illustrate the Native Hawaiian perspective.<\/p>\n
