  {"id":70421,"date":"2017-11-02T16:59:59","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T02:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=70421"},"modified":"2019-03-13T15:00:53","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T01:00:53","slug":"documenting-the-rise-of-native-hawaiian-activism-film-and-panel-discussion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/11\/02\/documenting-the-rise-of-native-hawaiian-activism-film-and-panel-discussion\/","title":{"rendered":"Documenting the rise of Native Hawaiian activism film and panel discussion"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_70449\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70449\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/west-oahu-documenting-acitivism.jpg\" alt=\"people holding signs\" width=\"676\" height=\"468\" class=\"size-full wp-image-70449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/west-oahu-documenting-acitivism.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/west-oahu-documenting-acitivism-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70449\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From the film <em>Documenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movement<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/uluulu.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Ulu Ulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu<\/span> Archive<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> explores how the early years of Native Hawaiian activism was documented with a screening of <em>Documenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movement<\/em>\u00a0followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers who helped capture the rise of the movement in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>The event on Monday, November 6, 11 a.m&#8211;12:30 p.m. at the\u00a0<span aria-label=\"Ulu Ulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu<\/span> Henry <span aria-label=\"kuualoha\">Ku&#699;ualoha<\/span> Giugni Moving Image Archive of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u00a0in the James and Abigail Campbell Library is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the community<\/p>\n<h2><em>Documenting Activism<\/em> film<\/h2>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Ulu Ulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu<\/span> produced the 45-minute film to commemorate the first landing by activists on the island of\u00a0<span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe\">Kaho&#699;olawe<\/span> on January 4, 1976\u00a0to protest military use of the island for bombing practice.<\/p>\n<p><em>Documenting Activism<\/em> draws footage from\u00a0<em><span aria-label=\"moolelo\">Mo&#699;olelo<\/span> o ka <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;\u0101ina<\/span><\/em>, a 1984 <abbr>KITV<\/abbr> production that was unique among commercial broadcasters at the time in attempting to address Native Hawaiian issues from the perspective of Hawaiians.
