Eleven first and second year students in Kauaʻi<\/span> Community College\u2019s nursing program<\/a> received a scholarship from the Mokihana Club<\/a> of Kauaʻi<\/span>.<\/p>\n

“It is with pride that Mokihana honors our hard-working nursing students,” said Becky Fries, who chairs the club\u2019s scholarship committee and presented the scholarships on November 20. “We have a lot of respect for the students.”<\/p>\n

The students who received the awards are Brittney Barriera<\/strong>, Amy “Shale” Hicks<\/strong>, Darlene Jarquio<\/strong>, Cara Kruse<\/strong>, Jea Kyla Sheyne Laganina<\/strong>, Jolene Lima<\/strong>, Cynthia Perez<\/strong>, Hector Perez<\/strong>, Kaanoipua Roback<\/strong>, Kaz Tasic<\/strong> and Devan Ueno<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“The nursing program is so appreciative of the financial support for our students,” said Maureen Tabura<\/strong>, nursing program coordinator. ”It lessens the burden of financial worry.”<\/p>\n

Nursing program counselor Shelley Sutter<\/strong> works closely with students supporting them each step of the way to earn their degree. “I am so grateful for the significant financial support Mokihana provides our hard-working nursing students,” said Sutter.<\/p>\n

More about the Mokihana Club<\/h2>\n

The mission of the Mokihana Club is to “be a force of social and cultural stimulation and to undertake civil development and improvement.”<\/p>\n

The club was established in 1905, under the leadership of Dora Isenberg. Elsie Wilcox was its first president.<\/p>\n

In 1916, to address the pressing need for health services, Mabel Wilcox was selected as chair of the health committee. Wilcox promoted healthcare for pregnant women.<\/p>\n

In 2003, recognizing the shortage of nurses, the Mokihana Club established a scholarship partnership with Kauaʻi<\/span> CC<\/abbr>\u2019s<\/a> nursing program. Over the years, more than $100,000 in nursing scholarships have been awarded.<\/p>\n

The Mokihana Club awards scholarships annually with all proceeds raised at its Mokihana Golf game.<\/p>\n

The next event, open to the public, will be the club\u2019s 16th annual game, to be held February 10, 2018 at the Po\u2018ip\u016b Bay Golf Course. To register, visit the Mokihana Club website<\/a> or call (808) 332-0282. Registration is 6:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
