The intent of the series is to bring the community to the college.<\/p>\n<p>All lectures will be presented in the newly renovated <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;\u014chi&#699;a<\/span> Auditorium at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, and each lecture is scheduled for 3&#8211;4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74453\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/kapiolani-franco-r.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/kapiolani-franco-r-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-74453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/kapiolani-franco-r-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/kapiolani-franco-r.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robert Franco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>February 12, &ldquo;Sustainability and Climate Action at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College: We Are Still In,&rdquo; presented by Robert Franco<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Franco will provide a lively and engaging discussion of the college\u2019s leadership within the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> System, the western region of the U.S. and nationally in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>addressing statewide environmental and social sustainability issues<\/li>\n<li>developing sustainability curriculum and instruction in the liberal arts and <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>engaging with government, schools and local organizations to meet urgent needs for community resilience<\/li>\n<li>envisioning a green workforce and the &ldquo;resilience professional&rdquo; needs for our island communities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Participants are encouraged to review the campus <a href=\"http:\/\/ofie.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/KapCC_Sustain_Climate_Plan_050217.pdf\">Sustainability and Climate Action Plan<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>Franco is an ecological and demographic anthropologist whose research focuses on contemporary Hawaiian, Samoan, and Pacific Islander sociocultural issues. He oversees quantitative studies of student engagement, learning and achievement, specifically degree completion and transfer. He is also a champion of several national initiatives in science education and civic responsibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 12, &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s Community is Engaging Cybersecurity,&rdquo; with Reynold Hioki, cybersecurity coordinator, State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cybersecurity is a topic for everyone. When money is stolen, intellectual property is taken and identities are hijacked, individual lives are impacted. This informational presentation will cover what <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is collectively doing to address the cybersecurity challenges of today and to prepare for the future. It will also provide cyber safety awareness in order to thrive as a digitally connected community.<\/p>\n<p>Hioki\u2019s certifications and professional affiliations allow him to integrate and promote <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s cyber safety awareness efforts. The film is based on Clark&#8217;s book <em>Hawaiian Surfing: Traditions from the Past<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As narrator of the film, Clark identifies six surf sports that were practiced by native Hawaiians, including action shots of each.
