They went on a tour of three integral parts of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa that just about every school age child on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> has, or will visit at some point in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>The first stop was the Lyon Arboretum deep in M&#257;noa valley. The arboretum is the only botanical garden located in a tropical rainforest in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The next stop was the Ka Papa <span aria-label=\"Loi O\">Lo&#699;i &#699;O<\/span> K&#257;newai, a center for Hawaiian learning and home to a pure collection of kalo, native trees and shrubs along the M&#257;noa stream.<\/p>\n<p>The tour ended with a visit to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waquarium.org\/\">Waik&#299;k&#299; Aquarium<\/a>, where more than 300,000 people visit each year to see 500 species of aquatic animals and plants.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They are all wonderful examples of the university interacting with the community and really providing for a preservation of the land, starting from mauka and going to makai,&rdquo; said Apple. &ldquo;Today has been a great experience for getting a real flavor for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Outgoing M&#257;noa Chancellor <b>Virginia Hinshaw<\/b> organized the tour, part of her efforts for a seamless leadership transition.<\/p>\n<p>All three locations are critical to Chancellor Apple&#8217;s focus on research and the benefits that come with it. &ldquo;Our three big themes are to grow the research economy in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, and then to also help our students to become active participants in that society and the new knowledge economy, and to preserve and perpetuate Hawaiian culture&rdquo; said Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Chancellor Apple is the first to admit that he has a lot to learn but says he will work with everyone involved so that the university is an important partner in all that we do here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>M&#257;noa Chancellor Tom Apple spent his second day on the job touring the Lyon Arboretum, Ka Papa <span aria-label=\"Loi O\">Lo&#699;i &#699;O<\/span> K&#257;newai and the Waik&#299;k&#299; Aquarium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[25,12],"tags":[9],"class_list":["post-7485","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-academic-news","category-video","tag-uh-manoa","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7485","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7485"}],"version-history":[{"count":25,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7485\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":152929,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7485\/revisions\/152929"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7485"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7485"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7485"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
