{"id":80816,"date":"2018-06-11T08:00:33","date_gmt":"2018-06-11T18:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=80816"},"modified":"2020-01-09T16:18:42","modified_gmt":"2020-01-10T02:18:42","slug":"uh-hilo-chemical-analysis-of-lava-flow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/06\/11\/uh-hilo-chemical-analysis-of-lava-flow\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo team provides <abbr title=\"United States Geological Survey\">USGS<\/abbr> critical, daily chemical analysis of lava flow"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/knEj_cnqN8A?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>As the lava from the volcanic eruption on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island continues to flow, a team from the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> is providing critical information to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/\">U.S. Geological Survey<\/a> scientists responding to the natural disaster&#8212;real-time chemistry analysis of lava samples that help determine how the lava will behave and how fast it will move.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The first time anybody is trying to do this, to really look at the chemistry at the same time the volcano is erupting,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo Volcanologist <strong>Cheryl Gansecki<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The samples are collected daily from the flows, bagged and dated, and brought back to the Hilo campus. That\u2019s when the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo team goes to work.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80823\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/hilo-gansecki-c-lava-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80823\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/hilo-gansecki-c-lava-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/hilo-gansecki-c-lava-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/hilo-gansecki-c-lava.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cheryl Gansecki examining lava<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We can do a really quick chemical analysis, we can look for tracers that tell us if anything is changing in the magma, in the system, and get that information back to <abbr>HVO<\/abbr> right away, usually within hours, or at least a day,&rdquo; said Gansecki.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a process that used to take weeks or months. The new system is also providing once in a lifetime opportunities for <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo undergraduate students who test the lava samples.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My job is to take those, turn them into powder, and run them through the machine and that gives us chemical data,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo geology student Ryan Sasaki.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo has been analyzing lava flow samples from K\u012blauea since 2013 but the composition barely changed. Then came May 2018 and a dramatic change.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u02bbs magma that has been stored, it\u2019s older, it\u2019s colder and then as the fissures progressed, we started to see, younger, hotter, magma coming in,&rdquo; ,&rdquo; said Gansecki.<\/p>\n<p>This type of lava is more fluid and can travel longer distances. The chemical change detected by the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo team preceded the change in the eruptive behavior by two to three days.
