Castle Foundation<\/a> was honored as GEAR UP Community Partner of the Year at the seventh annual GEAR UP Leadership Awards in Washington, D.C. Nominated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.p20hawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> P&#8211;20 Partnerships for Education<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edpartnerships.org\/\">National Council for Community and Education Partnerships<\/a> (<abbr>NCCEP<\/abbr>) awarded the Castle Foundation for its outstanding support and commitment to numerous initiatives that prepare <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s low-income students for college and career success.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Castle Foundation has been an invaluable partner in raising student achievement and moving <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> closer to our 55 by &rsquo;25 education goal,&rdquo; says <strong>Stephen Schatz<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> P&#8211;20 executive director. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> P&#8211;20 is incredibly thankful for the collaboration with our GEAR UP <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> program to improve access for thousands of students statewide. They are very deserving of this year\u2019s <abbr title=\"National Council for Community and Education Partnerships\">NCCEP<\/abbr> award.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> P&#8211;20 Partnerships for Education is a statewide partnership led by the <a href=\"http:\/\/earlylearning.hawaii.gov\/\">Executive Office on Early Learning<\/a>, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">Department of Education<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82139\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82139\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hawaiip20-gear-up-award-kids-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"middle school students participating in a science project\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hawaiip20-gear-up-award-kids-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hawaiip20-gear-up-award-kids-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hawaiip20-gear-up-award-kids.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Middle school students from Jarrett, Washington, Central, Waipahu, Dole and Kal\u0101kaua participate in GENE-ius Day <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> Summer Program, funded by GEAR UP <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 14,000 students statewide in grades 7 through first year in college are provided information, support, resources and services through GEAR UP <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, a statewide college access grant under <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> P&#8211;20 Partnerships for Education. The grant is designed to reduce gaps among student populations who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;At no time in our state\u2019s history has it been more important for our youth to attain a postsecondary degree or credential,&rdquo; says Alex Harris, Castle Foundation strategic advisor. &ldquo;Doing so opens doors and increases opportunities. We are honored to partner with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> P&#8211;20 to extend the benefits of the federal GEAR UP grant to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s students. This award reflects the success of hard work by countless teachers, administrators and students.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Preparing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai&#699;i\u2019s<\/span> students for success<\/h2>\n<p>The Castle Foundation supports high school graduation and college access initiatives by investing in a diverse range of programs that successfully reach thousands of students across the state\u2019s K&#8211;12 and postsecondary education pipeline. Over the years, its support of public education initiatives has been highly impactful.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation\u2019s investment in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> P&#8211;20\u2019s Early College High School program helped mobilize the Early College movement, which enables students to earn both college and high school credit simultaneously. In addition, the Castle Foundation supported GEAR UP <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s efforts to make college more affordable by supporting the &ldquo;Cash for College Challenge&rdquo; to activate low-income schools to encourage more students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
