Housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> (<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>) at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa, <abbr>CES<\/abbr> is the world\u2019s largest non-traditional education system found in almost all of the 3,150 counties in the 50 states as well as all of the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Territories. In <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, about 500 people are <a href=\"https:\/\/gms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/gs\/handler\/getmedia.ashx?moid=30997&#038;dt=3&#038;g=12\">impacted<\/a> by <abbr>CES<\/abbr> every day.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As we celebrate the anniversaries of <abbr>4-H<\/abbr> and extension in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, it is good to know what that means,&rdquo; said <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/07\/25\/nicholas-comerford-ctahr-dean\/\">Nicholas Comerford<\/a>. &ldquo;<abbr title=\"heart, head, hand and health\">4-H<\/abbr> is a program that teaches youth about the proper way to live through the use of heart, head, hand and health. It is a message that any parent would want their child exposed to. <abbr>4-H<\/abbr> is now part of extension, and this is the outreach education program for farmers, ranchers, natural resources managers and families that strives to help folks be successful in their lives.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Educational outreach to the community, or extension, is the third major component of land-grant universities, such as <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, along with instruction and research. The partnership between federal, state and local governments provides science-based information and educational programs in agriculture, natural resources and human resources.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>\u2019s Cooperative Extension Service will be celebrating its rich history on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ala Moana Hotel Hibiscus Ballrooms. Stakeholders, federal, state and local government partners, and retirees are invited to join in looking forward to the future of <abbr>CES<\/abbr>. The registration deadline is October 26.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhces.weebly.com\/\">celebration website<\/a>, call (808) 956-8139 or email <a href=\"mailto:extension@ctahr.hawaii.edu\">extension@ctahr.hawaii.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Promoting practical information<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86357\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86357\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-ctahr-extension-waimanalo-aquaponics.jpg\" alt=\"people learning about aquaponics\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-86357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-ctahr-extension-waimanalo-aquaponics.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-ctahr-extension-waimanalo-aquaponics-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cooperative Extension Service engages with the community to promote food sustainability through aquaponics.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The national Cooperative Extension Service was created in 1914 with the passage of the Smith-Lever Act, which authorized Congress to fund agricultural colleges to &ldquo;aid in diffusing among people of the United States useful and practical information on subjects relating to agriculture and home economics, and to encourage the application of the same.&rdquo; Extension programs in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> began both earlier and later than that date.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s Cooperative Extension Service upholds <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>\u2019s mission to create and deliver knowledge that supports and strengthens families, agricultural and food systems, and the natural environment by educating and serving the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and around the world with integrity and excellence. <\/p>\n<p>In addition, extension programs support <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s agriculture industry and the state\u2019s move toward greater food and fuel self-sufficiency and help protect natural resources.
