Richardson School of Law<\/a> library at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>John Dean, banker and entrepreneur, and the Estate of William K. Richardson gave the collection of 59 bowls crafted by the late Dan DeLuz of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island to the law school in memory of <strong>William &ldquo;Billy&rdquo; K. Richardson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86401\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86401\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-law-library-bowls-2.jpg\" alt=\"women putting bowl into bowl display case\" width=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-86401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-law-library-bowls-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/manoa-law-library-bowls-2-254x300.jpg 254w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Victoria Szymczak, director of the Law Library, with some of the DeLuz bowls.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Billy Richardson was interim director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/research\/contact-otted\/\"><abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development<\/a> and son of law school founder and namesake Chief Justice <strong>William S. Richardson<\/strong>, who was a good friend and business colleague of Dean.<\/p>\n<p>Lea Hong, Billy Richardson&#8217;s widow, said the gift was contemplated before her husband&#8217;s death last November.<\/p>\n<p>Said Dean, &ldquo;I have &lsquo;turned&rsquo; bowls in my day so I have a great respect for the craftsmanship that goes into them. Billy and I talked about someday giving the bowls to an institution where they could be shared with the broader public. We wanted to share DeLuz&#8217;s work; he was a gifted man. At the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.law.hawaii.edu\/\">law school library<\/a>, his work now honors both Billy and <abbr title=\"Chief Justice\">CJ<\/abbr>, his father.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The beautiful DeLuz bowls were made over many years from a remarkable range of woods such as lychee, koa, mango, sandalwood and <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;&#333;hi&#699;a<\/span>. A portion of the collection was formerly on display at Dean&#8217;s downtown office when he was <abbr title=\"chief executive officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of Central Pacific Bank.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are extremely fortunate to be the recipient of these amazing gifts,&rdquo; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/personnel\/szymczak\/victoria\"><strong>Victoria Szymczak<\/strong><\/a>, associate professor and law library director. &ldquo;The magnificent bowls fit beautifully with the attractive look of our recently renovated law library.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For the full story, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/article\/law-school-gift-bowls-made-master-craftsman-dan-deluz-honors-memory-william-%E2%80%98billy%E2%80%99-k\">law school website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212;By Beverly Creamer<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Banker John Dean and the Estate of William K.
