The University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> is collaborating with Chamber Music Hawaiʻi<\/span> on a production of Igor Stravinsky\u02bbs l\u02bbHistore du Soldat<\/em> (Soldier\u02bbs Tale) in ʻ\u014dlelo Hawaiʻi<\/span>, Moʻolelo<\/span> o ke Koa<\/a><\/em> with a chamber ensemble and dance.<\/p>\n

The project is the thesis production of Todd Farley<\/strong> who is working on his masters in fine arts at 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n

“My work with the production was to conceptualize the whole story as a Hawaiian adaptation of Stravinsky\u2019s work,” Farley said.<\/p>\n

Farley sought the assistance of 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Hawaiian language student Kaipu Baker<\/strong> for help with the ʻ\u014dlelo Hawaiʻi<\/span>, and Baker became the project\u2019s Hawaiian language director.<\/p>\n

“The most important thing to me is keeping the play genuine and k\u016bpono (honest) to what we hold as true to Hawaiian beliefs and practice in the performance,” Baker said.<\/p>\n

Last year was the 100th anniversary of the work by Stravinsky and Swiss writer C.F. Famuz.<\/p>\n

“This story tells both a European story and a Hawaiian story together,” Farley said. “And just as our people now here on the islands of Hawaiʻi<\/span> wrestle with what it means to be a world citizen as well as Hawaiian, I think that helps us probe that question.”<\/p>\n

The production features theatre, dance, Hawaiian language and Hawaiian studies students from 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n

The production will be performed for the public at the Doris Duke Theatre<\/a> at the Honolulu Museum of Art on January 14, and at Palik\u016b Theatre<\/a> at Windward Community College on January 18. Tickets can be purchased at ChamberMusicHawaii.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Moʻolelo<\/span> o Ke Koa will also be performed at Palik\u016b Theatre for the Hawaiian Immersion Schools in the Koʻolaupoko<\/span> and Koʻolauloa<\/span> districts.<\/p>\n
