Determined to succeed, she approached teachers for tutoring and put in time after school learning to overcome her difficulties.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89305\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89305\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/west-oahu-academic-olympian.jpg\" alt=\"student smiling\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-89305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/west-oahu-academic-olympian.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/west-oahu-academic-olympian-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leanne Villanueva<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Flash forward to earlier this year, when her story caught the eye of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>  Governor David Ige, who posted to Facebook. &ldquo;Despite being a young immigrant, Villanueva worked hard to get to where she is today because she is determined to realize a successful future someday,&rdquo; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Villanueva is recognized as an Academic Olympian&#8212;she earned an associate of arts degree from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a> through the Early College program, graduated as a Waipahu High School valedictorian with a 4.1 <abbr title=\"grade point average\">GPA<\/abbr> and is now studying business administration at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Early College program<\/h2>\n<p>In high school, Villanueva committed to an Early College program after hearing Mark Silliman, Waipahu\u2019s Early College director, speak about the opportunity to earn a college degree at no cost while in high school.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It really appealed to me,&rdquo; she said. It was still an arduous path to take&#8211;Villanueva found herself at school from 8 a.m. to 4 or 5 p.m. working on her high school class homework prior to college classes beginning later in the day.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/early-college\/\"><strong>More about Early college in <em><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> News<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;I had great teachers, great professors, who were always there to help.&rdquo; She also credits Silliman, Waipahu Principal Keith Hayashi, Gov. David Ige for his support of Early College programs and the McInerny Foundation as contributing to her success. &rdquo;Without them, I would not have been in the position I am today and achieve what I was able to achieve. My success is also their success.&ldquo;<\/p>\n<p>She recommends the program to others because of the opportunity to gain college credits at no cost and for the experiences it offers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If you\u2019re really driven, there\u2019s nothing that will stop you from making the journey,&rdquo; said Villanueva, who was awarded a Chancellor\u2019s Scholarship at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.
