Front from left, Isobel Webster, Charles Rosser, Jeffrey Berenberg, Gerry Patricio and Josette Baza.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/\">National Cancer Institute<\/a> (<abbr>NCI<\/abbr>) approved the addition of a health center in Guam to its <a href=\"https:\/\/ncorp.cancer.gov\/\"><abbr>NCI<\/abbr> Community Oncology Research Program<\/a> (<abbr>NCORP<\/abbr>) in January 2019. The <abbr>FHP<\/abbr> Health Center\u2019s affiliation with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Cancer Center\u2019s<\/a> Minority Underserved <abbr>NCORP<\/abbr> will allow patients in Guam to participate in <abbr>NCI<\/abbr>-sponsored cancer clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Currently, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and Asians represent a small fraction of patients enrolled in <abbr>NCI<\/abbr>-sponsored cancer clinical trials nationwide,&rdquo; said <strong>Jeffrey Berenberg<\/strong>, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> minority\/underserved <abbr>NCORP<\/abbr> principal investigator. &ldquo;The inclusion of Guam to <abbr>NCORP<\/abbr> will increase accruals of underrepresented populations including ethnic minorities and rural residents. There is a great need to introduce cancer control, prevention and cancer-care delivery research trials to Guam given the heterogeneous population, geographic location, unique cultural practices and diet.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I realized that although efforts had been made in the past to get <abbr>NCI<\/abbr>-sponsored cancer clinical trials to Guam, no one had succeeded,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.takecareasia.com\/fhpProvider.php#samir-ambrale\">Samir Ambrale<\/a>, <abbr>FHP<\/abbr> Health Center <abbr>NCORP<\/abbr> site principal investigator. &ldquo;Most (95 percent) of the cancer care is delivered locally in Guam. Patients are advised about enrollment in cancer clinical trials available in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> or the continental <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> for treatment of advanced cancer, but are routinely unable to travel for cancer care due to financial reasons and lack of social support. The new affiliation with the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center <abbr>NCORP<\/abbr> program will allow for cancer patients in Guam to have access locally to the latest treatments through cancer clinical trials.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The majority of Guam\u2019s population (81 percent) consists of Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and Asians. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guamcrc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/GuamCancerFactsFigure2008%E2%80%942012.pdf\">During the period 2008&#8211;2012, 1,904 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in Guam, and 736 residents lost their life to cancer.<\/a> Guam is a <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> island territory in Micronesia, in the Western Pacific. It is located approximately 3,950 miles west of the Hawaiian Islands.
