(Photo credit: East-West Center)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>World-renowned architect <strong>Ieoh Ming (<abbr>IM<\/abbr>) Pei<\/strong>, the creator of masterpiece building designs around the world, died on May 16 in New York at the age of 102. His imprint lives on in two buildings at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> campus that continue to draw crowds to East-West Road: <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/\">Kennedy Theatre<\/a>, which houses the Department of <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/theatre\/\">Theater<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/dance\/dance-program-overview\/\">Dance<\/a>, and Jefferson Hall, home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastwestcenter.org\/about-ewc\/campus-maps\/hawaii-imin-international-conference-center-at-jefferson-hall\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Imin International Conference Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pei will be remembered for his design of buildings including the Louvre Pyramid in Paris, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96802\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96802\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/manoa-in-memoriam-architect-pei-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Ieoh Ming Pei\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-96802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/manoa-in-memoriam-architect-pei-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/manoa-in-memoriam-architect-pei-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/manoa-in-memoriam-architect-pei.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96802\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ieoh Ming Pei<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>IM<\/abbr> Pei was not only a great architect but an engaging and approachable human being,&rdquo; said <strong>William Chapman<\/strong>, interim dean of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a>. &ldquo;I attended the American Academy of Arts and Letters ceremony in 1979, when Pei won the Gold Medal for Architecture. We talked for a good 15 minutes, standing over a model of one of his buildings. I was a mere graduate student, he was a significant architect, but he had time to talk and ask me about my own career plans. A lovely man. We are lucky to have not one but an entire complex of buildings at the East-West Center and Kennedy Theatre.
