(Photo credit: <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During any given semester upward of 300 students, representing about 10 percent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2013West\">Hawai&#699;i&#8211;West<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Oahu\u2019s\">O&#699;ahu\u2019s<\/span><\/a> enrollment, list their permanent home addresses as being on Maui, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, <span aria-label=\"Kauai,\">Kaua&#699;i,<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> or <span aria-label=\"Lanai.\">L&#257;na&#699;i.<\/span> The students take courses through online classes or via Interactive Television, where classes are live streamed, allowing them to to <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/distancelearning\/\">participate virtually as the course is being taught on the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> campus<\/a> in Kapolei.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> has the highest percentage of distance and online courses and programs among <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> campuses, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/aa\/IAFP_BOR_Approved_April17.pdf\">2017 Board of Regents report (<small><abbr title=\"portable document format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/small>)<\/a>. It is an area of focus as the campus seeks to increase its enrollment. In 2018, the percentage of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students enrolled in at least one distance education class was 79.1 percent.  The percentage of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students enrolled in all distance education classes was 37.7 percent.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the spring 2019 semester, 55 graduates earned degrees from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu,\">O&#699;ahu,<\/span> but took their classes while residing on the neighbor islands. This included 31 graduates on Maui, 12 on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, 7 on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, 3 on <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> and 2 on <span aria-label=\"Lanai\">L&#257;na&#699;i<\/span>. <\/p>\n<h2>On <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98120\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98120\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/west-oahu-distance-ed-grad-callahn.jpg\" alt=\"Callahan in regalia\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-98120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/west-oahu-distance-ed-grad-callahn.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/west-oahu-distance-ed-grad-callahn-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/west-oahu-distance-ed-grad-callahn-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98120\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rheif Callahan (Photo credit: <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Rheif Callahan<\/strong>, a <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> resident who earned a bachelor of business administration with a concentration in accounting, was among four <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students accepting their degrees during <a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College\u2019s<\/a> May 10 commencement ceremony. Under an agreement, distance learning students can participate in the college\u2019s ceremonies and receive their degree from a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> representative.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;All in all, it was a great experience,&rdquo; Callahan wrote in an email. &ldquo;I had a lot of great instructors, even though I never met them, and despite being on another island they were quick to respond to my questions, and I even felt I got to know them a little bit. Thank you <strong>Katie Landgraf<\/strong>, <strong>Leslie Rush<\/strong> and <strong>Edward Keaunui<\/strong> for helping me get my <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> and making a positive impact on my life.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For neighbor island students, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\u2019s\">O&#699;ahu\u2019s<\/span> distance learning program (and those from other <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> campuses) are a way to pursue a four-year degree without having to leave home or uproot families to move to <span aria-label=\"Oahu.\">O&#699;ahu.<\/span> Callahan, a 2008 graduate of Waimea High School, was able to study accounting without having to give up a career he\u2019d established on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I play music for income and through it, I was able to pay for my education while still having ample free time to study,&rdquo; wrote Callahan, a bass and guitar player in several groups on the Garden Island. He was able to keep the regular gigs that would have been lost if he had moved.<\/p>\n<h2>University Centers<\/h2>\n<p>Callahan took mostly online courses and when required, visited <a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/university-center\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>\u2019s University Center<\/a> for advising. According to <strong>Gloria Niles<\/strong>, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> director of distance education, university centers serve as &ldquo;brokers&rdquo; with <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> campuses that offer baccalaureate or higher degrees. That allows neighbor island residents to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhonline.hawaii.edu\/programs\">earn bachelor\u2019s and graduate degrees or certificates from the other island campuses<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegefactual.com\/colleges\/university-of-hawaii-at-manoa\/academic-life\/distance-learning\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/dl\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Besides <span aria-label=\"Kauai,\">Kaua&#699;i,<\/span> <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> partners with university centers at <a href=\"http:\/\/uctrmaui.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/palamanui\/about\/\">P&#257;lamanui campus of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> for local support services such as proctoring of exams and facilitating communication among campuses.
