Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) begins its studies in July. Nine of the students have completed a grueling year of medical courses, exams and countless small group sessions to earn their status as the first members accepted into the new <abbr title=\"medical doctor\">MD<\/abbr> class through the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/offices-programs\/imi\/\"><span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> Post-Baccalaureate Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On June 13, the students celebrated finishing a yearlong medical school &ldquo;boot camp&rdquo; for aspiring physicians who come from disadvantaged or underserved communities. <span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> enrolls up to a dozen college graduates each year. After completion of the rigorous program, they earn admission into <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If I didn\u2019t get into <span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> I don\u2019t know if I would\u2019ve kept trying. I think this has provided me with the foundation that I need,&rdquo; said <strong>Samuel &ldquo;Kamuela&rdquo; Andrade<\/strong>, a former lifeguard and firefighter from East <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>The graduates:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Krystyl Anderson<\/strong> (Okinawan) graduated from Pearl City High School and earned her <abbr title=\"bachelor of science\">BS<\/abbr> in biology at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Samuel &ldquo;Kamuela&rdquo; Andrade<\/strong> (Hawaiian) graduated from Kamehameha Schools on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and earned his <abbr title=\"bachelor of art\">BA<\/abbr> in ethnic studies at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Bianca Calio<\/strong> (Filipino) graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy and earned her <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in biology at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>James DeJesus<\/strong> (Hawaiian) attended Kamehameha Schools on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and earned his <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in biochemistry from the University of Puget Sound.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weiming Du<\/strong> (Chinese) graduated from Zhongshan No. 1 Middle School and earned his <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in biology at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bree Kaneakua<\/strong> (Hawaiian) attended Kamehameha Schools in <span aria-label=\"Keaau\">Kea&#699;au<\/span> and earned her <abbr>BA<\/abbr> in psychology from Creighton University.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jenna Maligro<\/strong> (Filipino) graduated from Mililani High School and earned her <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in molecular biology from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tana Ramos<\/strong> (Chamorro) graduated from the Academy of Our Lady of Guam and earned her <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in microbiology from the University of California San Diego.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sharon Wong <\/strong>(Vietnamese) graduated from Kaiser High School and earned her <abbr>BA<\/abbr> in biology from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 46 years, <span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> (Hawaiian for &ldquo;those who seek to heal&rdquo;) has produced 278 doctors, 80 percent of the practicing doctors provide primary care services.
