Administration – LEED Gold

Overview

"Defined as a ‘Landmark Building’ the architecture of the new Administration Health Sciences building is influenced by history, informed by the site and shaped by program. It aspires to create a variety of flexible workplace and learning environments that engage students, faculty and staff. It seeks to inspire and delight.”

The project site is on former sugar cane land with a legacy of 100 years of agriculture. The site aspires to restore, heal, and revive the native landscape in order to further inform and shape the land. By doing so, the facility demonstrates the University’s environmental sustainability leadership and its stewardship of the land for future development within West O’ahu.

The Administration portion of the building includes offices for the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellors for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Administration and their support staff. The Health laboratories and classrooms are located on the eastern end, aligning itself with the Library.

A unique 3-dimensional texture was developed for the building skin, similar to the geometric patterns found on traditional kapa or Hawaiian fabric. Conceived as a large tapestry that embraces the entire building, the building design offers richness to the campus environment that is complimentary to neighboring buildings. The flexible workplace and learning environments were designed to engage those that study and work there.

The ecological design and construction work included bioretention systems and rainwater catchment for managing stormwater onsite and the construction of an onsite greywater treatment system treating the building sink water and condensate recovery for reuse as subsurface drip irrigation. All the water conservation gardens are interactive and can be utilized as educational features to both the campus students and staff.

To reduce energy consumption the building features an 89 kW DC photovoltaic system on the rooftop, high efficiency HVAC systems, and 100% LED lighting. An astounding 97% of regularly occupied spaces are naturally daylit and 96% of those spaces have access to outdoor views of the beautiful Waianae Mountains and Ewa Plains. Natural light is more pleasing, healthful and psychologically beneficial than artificial light. Daylight is also a highly cost-effective means of reducing the energy for electrical lighting.

The Administration Health Sciences building heralds in a new culture and relationship with the campus. Bringing its students and faculty closer together in a positive and sustainable new environment that will continue the University of Hawai’i legacy for years to come.
