ESCAPE FROM POMPEII Survivors of the Eruption of Pompeii 79 CE PROFESSOR STEVEN TUCK, Miami University Ohio In 79 CE Mount Vesuvius erupted, and buried the city of Pompeii, near Naples. It remained hidden until it was rediscovered in the 18th century when excavations began and are still ongoing. Today it is a vast site where you can walk through a city of the ancient Romans, almost intact. Thousands were killed, but some survived. The Pompeii Survivors Project has worked for almost ten years to identify and trace those survivors. Most of that work has focused on simply determining if, as popular culture has repeatedly stated, this was truly an apocalyptic event. Or, if anyone escaped Pompeii or Herculaneum could they be traced. Yes, there were survivors. We have been able to trace some of them, and their patterns in personal and community identities as they adjust to new lives in new cities since return to the destroyed cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum was impossible.
