Diasporic Responses to Pacific Architecture in Aotearoa
April 14, 5:30pm - 6:30pmMānoa Campus, School of Architecture
A series of student workshops and presentations will introduce the discussion on Pacific architecture, followed by a guest lecture designed to support deeper engagement with Pacific concepts in the architectural design process. These workshops create a hands-on learning environment where students explore Pacific values through collective making, storytelling, mapping, and spatial experimentation. Rather than treating cultural concepts as abstract ideas or visual motifs, the workshops encourage students to understand them as living frameworks shaped by relationships, place, and lived experience. Guided discussions and reflective exercises help students consider cultural responsibility, positionality, and ethical engagement when designing within a Pacific context. By combining theory with practice, the workshops equip students with tools to translate Pacific concepts into contemporary architectural outcomes that are both culturally grounded and contextually responsive. The workshop format also fosters dialogue and collaboration, reinforcing the importance of collective thinking in Pacific design approaches.
