The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa presents the first installment of this season’s series, showcasing new choreography by its graduate and undergraduate dance students. This diverse production brings together student dancers, choreographers, technicians and designers to create a concert that demonstrates the breadth of the department’s training.

The program will be performed at the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre on October 29, 30 and 31, November 1 at 8 p.m. and November 2 at 2 p.m. A post-show discussion with the choreographers will follow the performance on Friday, October 31.

A highlight of the evening will be “Cash Variations,” which captures life experiences of one man expressed through four bodies. The piece is the BFA culminating project for Lexi Hughes. Another featured dance will be “Bananimal Dream,” an aerial dance exploring the relationship between risk and desire.

As always with 东精影业 Mānoa’s Footholds series, variety takes center stage. In the first half, “Goze, Under the Oak,” choreographed by Mitsuko Horikawa, has a live shamisen player, and “Flicker,” choreographed by Kent Shinomae, uses magic alongside exciting choreography. “Undertow,” conceived and choreographed by Blythe Stephens, is accompanied by an oceanic soundscape and explores the power of the sea.
