The University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补鈥檚 doctoral program in (CSP) has been reaccredited by the (APA) through 2035. The 10-year period is the maximum term given by the association.

“Accreditation is a vital process in clinical psychology, and we are proud that our program has been accredited by the American Psychological Association for more than five decades,” said Associate Professor and Clinical Training Director Anthony Papa, who led the reaccreditation effort. “This recognition affirms that our program prepares clinical psychologists to excel at the highest standards of professional practice—in clinical care, administration, supervision, research and teaching—across the many public and private institutions that serve the people of Hawaiʻi and beyond. APA accreditation also ensures that our graduates are qualified to pursue licensure in every state and to serve in the VA and other federal agencies nationwide.”

CSP is a full-time, 5-year program that integrates science and practice to enhance psychological knowledge, health and well-being. Its main goal is to equip graduates with skills to alleviate human suffering through an integrative psychological clinical science approach.

Since its establishment in the fall of 1970, CSP has graduated more than 200 clinical psychologists who have gone on to careers as clinicians, administrators and supervisors in hospitals, mental health centers, private practice and other health service settings, as well as teachers and researchers at universities and research hospitals in Hawaiʻi and across the country. CSP, which has been accredited by APA since 1972, currently has 31 students enrolled.

The University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 (JABSOM) received full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the next eight years, the maximum period granted, following a review in January 2025.

“Accreditation is crucial for any medical school, and receiving the maximum accreditation period of eight years is a significant achievement for JABSOM,” said JABSOM Dean Sam Shomaker. “The deeply rooted culture of Hawaiʻi is woven into everything we teach, and this resounding recognition is just another confirmation that our unique approach to care works and cannot be replicated.”

LCME evaluation covered 12 standards and 93 elements, assessing curriculum quality, student support services, faculty credentials and clinical partnerships.

In preparation for LCME review, JABSOM conducted a self-study process, led by Associate Dean Lee Buenconsejo-Lum, which spanned three years and included more than 125 faculty, staff and partners. It involved submission of more than 1,000 pages of data and documentation, along with an anonymous independent student analysis completed by current medical students.

LCME praised JABSOM鈥檚 strong clinical partnerships, financial health, curricular improvements and mission-aligned teaching.

The next full review is scheduled for the 2032–33 academic year. JABSOM will continue evolving its curriculum to meet Hawaiʻi鈥檚 healthcare needs.

Students at the University of Hawaiʻi at 贬颈濒辞鈥檚 (CoBE) are earning their degrees from one of the top business schools in the world.

The college was awarded extended accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), a distinction held by only 6% of business schools around the world.

The recognition means students can expect a world-class education backed by global standards. CoBE offers bachelor鈥檚 degrees in accounting and general business, with concentrations in finance, marketing, management, healthcare management, applied economics and professional studies.

“At a time when so many things are uncertain, it is reassuring to know that our students, faculty and staff have a solid foundation to work from,” said CoBE Director Todd Inouye. “Now our attention can be directed from building foundations to also growing our societal impact, enrollment and retention, including new initiatives at CoBE.”

High-quality education

东精影业 贬颈濒辞鈥檚 CoBE was first accredited in 2005 and remains one of only two AACSB-accredited business schools in Hawaiʻi. The rigorous AACSB standards recognize schools that demonstrate high-quality teaching, innovation and continuous improvement.

“Thinking about how far we have come over the past three years makes me extremely proud to be a member of this college and university community,” said Inouye.

The University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补鈥檚 (OPHS) has achieved a seven-year re-accreditation, through 2030, from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. This marks the first accreditation renewal since OPHS became part of the in 2016.

“The accreditation is a testament to what we are doing and the quality of all of our programs,” said Eric Hurwitz, OPHS director.

The accreditation process required OPHS to conduct a thorough self-study, starting in 2021, with the collaboration of faculty, staff, students and community partners. In March 2023, a CEPH team visited the campus to review the report and meet with various stakeholders.

OPHS serves more than 270 students across its programs, including a Bachelor of Arts in Public Health, Masters in Public Health in four specializations (health policy and management, epidemiology, social and behavioral health sciences, and Native Hawaiian and Indigenous health), Masters in Science (epidemiology), and two PhDs (community-based and translational research and epidemiology).

“We’re thrilled to have met the criteria, solidifying our place as a beacon of quality in public health education,” Hurwitz added. “We look forward to continuing our work on creating a positive impact on our community!”

“Full accreditation is a reflection of the quality of the program and the dedication of the faculty to our students and our community,” said 东精影业 Manoa Provost Michael Bruno.

As one of the smallest accredited programs, the 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 LIS program emphasizes the importance of relationships (pilina) among students, staff, faculty and the professional community. There are currently 54 graduate students enrolled in the program.

The ALA accreditation, which was first obtained in 1967 and most recently in 2016, holds significance as most libraries and archives prefer hiring graduates from accredited programs. 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 is among 64 accredited LIS programs in North America.

Unanimous praise from students and alumni

The re-accreditation process involved:

    graduates
LIS graduates at the fall 2022 ceremony.
  • LIS faculty submitted a comprehensive 178-page self study to the ALA Committee on Accreditation in August 2023 addressing systemic planning, curriculum, faculty, students, and administration, finances and resources.
  • An External Review Panel (ERP) composed of library professionals from the U.S. and Canada visited the LIS program in October 2023.
  • The team assessed internal documents, observed classes and interviewed various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, alumni, current students, community librarians and 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 administration.

The ERP reported unanimous praise from students and alumni for the program’s administrative policies and consistent support.

“We are very grateful that our community helped us tell our story, and demonstrated to the review team how we address the accreditation standards in our own unique ways,” said LIS Program Director Rich Gazan.

An inaugural open house for the School of Communication and Information is scheduled for April 5, 2024.

The University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 (DPS) recently achieved re-accreditation through the , Inc. (CALEA®) in July 2023. In 2019, DPS was the first college campus security agency to receive CALEA accreditation in the state, and just the second in the nation. Currently, DPS is also one of six nationwide agencies to receive the CALEA Campus Security Advanced Accreditation.

“Maintaining our CALEA accreditation is a testimonial to the professionalism that our officers and employees demonstrate at 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 on a daily basis,” said DPS Chief Andrew Black. “I am very proud of the women and men of DPS and their dedication to making the University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 a safe place to learn, work and visit.”

In order to achieve accredited status, DPS must comply with 293 standards and maintain continued compliance in order to keep their status. Accreditation lasts four years, during which time the agency must submit annual reports and participate in annual web-based assessments attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited. At the end of the cycle, peer assessors conduct a site-based review which includes interviewing various students, faculty, staff and community members. Once the review is completed, DPS sends representatives to attend a public hearing before the commission and is awarded re-accreditation.

Community involvement

The CALEA accreditation process is an ongoing effort, and initially involved more than three years of policy development and training, to align the department with industry best practices. Over the past four years, DPS has focused on strengthening department operations and policies even more, in order to receive the Advanced Accreditation status. The program focuses on the safety and security of students and employees, and applies standards that require organizations to consider critical issues such as facility risks, regulatory reporting, technology-based security monitoring, preventative patrol and a host of other issues that provide comprehensive service delivery. These concepts center on the community-oriented policing model, which seeks to involve the community in crime prevention and education.

Community-oriented policing provides a framework in which public safety agencies and citizens can work in partnership to prevent and control challenges confronting our communities and provides clear direction about community expectations. Accreditation serves to give an agency a proven management system of written directives, sound training, clearly defined lines of authority, and routine reports that support decision-making and resource allocation.

“We appreciate the 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 community鈥檚 continued support in our efforts to ensure a safe and secure campus for our students, employees, and visitors,” Black said.

GES graduates are well-prepared to successfully go on to professional careers in public and private-sectors related to the environmental sciences; professional schools in engineering, law, and medicine; graduate school programs in biology, chemistry, geography, and environmental, oceanographic, geological and atmospheric sciences; and graduate school programs in the social sciences such as urban and regional planning and public health, or in business such as finance.

“As an indicator of the program鈥檚 rigor, within a year of their graduation more than 90% of GES graduates are either employed or in graduate studies,” noted McManus. “Our graduates are prepared to help the state deal with a myriad of environment-related issues such as invasive species, coastline usage and change, coral reef health, marine and freshwater pollution, environmental planning, public health, and many other areas of need.”

Alumni experiences

GES alumni Leon Geschwind, currently employed with NOAA in Hawaiʻi, noted how GES prepared him for the workforce, “The GES program not only provided me with a holistic understanding of the Earth system but also gave me the skills necessary to communicate complex scientific topics to a wide range of audiences. From developing climate change teacher workshops to mentoring the next generation of students, the GES program laid a strong foundation for my future careers impacting the State of Hawaiʻi, first at Bishop Museum and now at NOAA. Twenty years after I graduated from the program, I had the privilege of paying it forward by mentoring a GES student through a NOAA summer internship program.”

Hawaiʻi born and raised GES alumnae Amanda Wong and Kealohi Sabate are now in graduate school at the University of California at Davis. Both applied for, and were awarded, support for their graduate studies from the competitive and prestigious .

Guidry, in conclusion, stated, “Achieving ABET accreditation is a significant accomplishment for the program with broader implications for 东精影业 Mānoa and the State of Hawaiʻi. It recognizes the program鈥檚 quality, places it among the best in the world, and provides students with the training to successfully address our state鈥檚 current and future environmental issues.”

The was recently reaffirmed for six years of accreditation by the Senior College and University Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WSCUC).

A review team visited the 东精影业 Hilo campus for an Accreditation Visit April 5–8, 2022 and recommended to grant the university accreditation through 2028, with a special visit in spring 2024, an offsite review due in fall 2027, and an accreditation visit in spring 2028.

“I appreciate the time and care that the visiting team took with this review, and I am happy they recognized some core strengths of our campus, which we seek to build on in the strategic plan,” Chancellor Bonnie Irwin said.

The Commission noted several areas for special recognition, among them:

  • 东精影业 贬颈濒辞鈥檚 strong sense of place
  • Commitment as a community to renormalize and promote the study of indigenous languages and cultures through the
  • Building and maintaining strong programmatic connections to the community
  • Emphasis on high-impact practices, including service learning

The Commission also included in its report eight recommendations that were made by the review team related to shared governance, assessment of student learning, program review, use of data-informed decision making, enrollment management, and financial planning. A Formal Notice of Concern was issued to underscore the urgency by which the eight areas need to be addressed by 2028. The review team鈥檚 special visit in 2024 will check on three areas that need progress: (1) the integration of all strategic plans, (2) improvement of assessment and program review, and (3) building institutional research capacity to develop a data-informed culture of decision-making.

“Some of the areas of improvement that WSCUC has requested are familiar to the 东精影业 Hilo campus because they have been noted in past reviews,” Irwin said. “This review is a wake-up call for us all—faculty, staff, and administration—to engage together in the work of making our campus the excellent institution that our island and our state deserve.”

The (NICE) at the University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 Outreach College has been reaffirmed for a full 10-year accreditation by the (CEA) from April 2022 through April 2032.

NICE centers on oral communication and cultural competence, as well as innovative methods for teaching and practicing real-world listening and speaking tasks.

NICE offers English courses throughout the year for students with a variety of goals. Study options include rigorous intensive English for academic, professional and general purposes, as well as short conversation courses that expose students to life in the U.S. and Hawaiʻi. TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) preparation classes are also offered.

CEA accreditation means that external reviewers have thoroughly assessed our NICE program offerings to ensure that they meet rigorous academic standards that help to ensure student success. This formal recognition from one of the leading organizations overseeing English language teaching and administration helps students know that the courses they take in the NICE program are of the highest quality,” said Stephanie Vie, acting dean of 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 Outreach College.

Cultural immersion

Originally from Chile, NICE program student Mitzi Angelina Labrin Vargas graduated from the University of Chile with a degree in civil engineering and worked as a civil engineer project manager for 11 years before quitting her job to come to 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 to study English.

“I have always wanted to study abroad and practice my English skills in an English country. I feel English is a universal language and I consider it a personal challenge,” said Labrin. “Hawaiʻi is the perfect place where you can find the perfect mix of studies and nature.”

“Mitzi has been studying in our program since July 2021. She is an outstanding student and recipient of numerous awards for three terms in a row and continues to work hard in the current term,” said Lisa Nakandakari, Outreach College international programs student services specialist. “NICE has really helped her improve her English, especially her confidence in speaking it. This is a testament to the high caliber of teachers and curriculum.”

“When I first came to Hawaiʻi I was able to understand but wasn鈥檛 able to speak fluently, now I’m doing better. I made friends and immersed myself in English,” said Labrin.

Labrin had the opportunity to be one of the interviewees during a site visit of the CEA accreditation, and was happy to contribute to the process. “I know how important the CEA accreditation is because in Chile having a professional license or accreditation is also very important,” she said.

The University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 has been reaffirmed for a full 10 years of accreditation, the longest period possible, by the Senior College & University Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The accreditation process is a marker of institutional quality, because accreditation is required by the U.S. Department of Education for students to be able to access federal financial assistance, including student loans.

“Receiving the full 10 years of reaffirmation shows that Hawaiʻi鈥檚 flagship university continues to operate at the highest level of excellence when it comes to providing higher education for the people of Hawaiʻi,” said 东精影业 President David Lassner. “It also shows that we are committed to continuous improvement as we meet the needs of our students and our state.”

The work toward accreditation began in 2017 and involved the new WASC process—Thematic Pathway for Reaffirmation—whereby universities are required to demonstrate compliance with WASC standards while advancing issues important to their campus community. 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补鈥檚 themes were Native Hawaiian Place of Learning, Transformational Student Success, and Academic Innovation and Engaged Learning.

东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 demonstrated the courage to pursue the most challenging areas of inquiry,” stated the WASC Senior College and University Commission review team in its final report highlighting many areas of success. For example, in describing 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 initiatives in academic innovation, the team stated, “Each of these was reflective of some of the best thinking nationally with regard to high impact educational practices. Each element stands as a body of work that is worthy of being spotlighted by the state鈥檚—or any state鈥檚—flagship institution of higher learning.”

The university was notified about the 10-year reaccreditation in a March 8 letter that also commended 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 for its efforts in multiple areas.

  • 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补鈥檚 approach to the process and ambitious themes, tackling challenging areas of inquiry with a commitment to a collaborative and inclusive self-study process.
  • The Wayfinding Project for demonstrating a commitment to incorporate Native Hawaiian language and navigation as part of becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning. This commission noted the project may be a model for other institutions.
  • The Institute for Sustainability and Resilience for its approach to the simultaneous advancement of teaching, research and service missions on topics of critical importance to the state and the development of sustainability courses as a curricular innovation.
  • The STAR project, the data-informed applications that assist with planning, enrollment management and student support.
  • The campus culture through which the faculty, staff and administration take seriously their commitment to support 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补鈥檚 students with academic advising, engaged learning initiatives and responsive student services.

“The commission鈥檚 acknowledgement of our innovation, culture and commitment to students is something our faculty, staff and administrators can be very, very proud of,” said 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 Provost Michael Bruno. President Lassner added “I am very proud of our WASC steering committee, our WASC writing team and especially the leadership from Provost Bruno and senior advisor Wendy Pearson, who spearheaded the effort with firmness and grace.”

More information on the reaffirmation process, including key documents and the steering committee and writing team members can be found on the .

As part of the re-accreditation process, the University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 submitted its Institutional Report to the Senior College & University Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). . The WASC review is scheduled for November 9–12, 2021. Out of an abundance of caution, WASC has determined that the review will be held remotely.

“We are tremendously grateful to the steering committee and writing teams who worked tirelessly over the last four years to support this effort,” said 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 Provost Michael Bruno. “A heartfelt mahalo to everyone who provided input and feedback throughout the process. The reaffirmation of our accreditation is an opportunity to reflect on our progress over the last 10 years in achieving the various aspects of our mission, to highlight our strengths, and to focus on how we can improve in serving our students, the greater UH 驶ohana and Hawaiʻi.”

The comprehensive review is under the (TPR) process, a streamlined review where institutions demonstrate compliance with WASC standards by focusing on issues (themes) of importance to the campus. 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 qualified to pursue the TPR owing to its success in the last round of accreditation in which the campus received 10 years (the maximum). The University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 (COE) has been awarded a full seven-year accreditation for its educator preparation programs by the (AAQEP) after an extensive review of evidence collected through self-study and peer review. In addition, the COE has the first to ever be accredited by AAQEP.

“Our AAQEP accredited programs engaged in a rigorous multi-year process that allowed us to highlight our strengths, showcase innovative practices and identify areas for further improvement,” stated COE Director of Assessment, Accreditation and Accountability Jessica Miranda. “This was a team effort that would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our program assessment coordinators, AAQEP self-study writing team members and exceptional COE community.”

AAQEP President and CEO Mark LaCelle-Peterson commended the college鈥檚 programs for giving careful attention to systematically using evidence for improvement and to meeting individual candidate and community needs. He cited the COE master鈥檚 and doctoral programs for extending opportunities for graduate study across Hawaiʻi and throughout the region to American S膩moa and other island communities.

“The University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 College of Education鈥檚 innovative application of AAQEP standards to these research-focused programs provides a framework for acknowledging successes and strengthening ongoing efforts toward the creation of a distinctively Hawaiian place of learning,” LaCelle-Peterson said.

National accreditation assures the quality of professional preparation programs through a nongovernmental, nonregulatory process of self-study and peer review. This standards- and evidence-based process serves to ensure accountability and continuous improvement. The AAQEP model is also designed to honor local context and foster innovation and collaboration among institutions.

COE Dean Nathan Murata said, “The recent AAQEP announcement for a full seven-year accreditation for both our initial teacher licensure and advanced programs is fantastic news during this challenging time for all. I am proud of our award-winning programs, which are a testament to our faculty, staff and students who excel at the highest level. We continue to collect, monitor and evaluate our data systems in order to maintain our high level of quality education.”
